Old Ball Players

I’m sure most of the fans of Texas Rangers, know the owner, CEO and club president Nolan Ryan. But do they know his achievements? He was a legend in MLB history, pitched for 27 years in 4 different teams, has a fastball of 110 miles per hour, which continued into his forties. He set the phenomenal record of strikeouts of 5,714 , leading ahead the second pitcher by more then 800. He notched 8 years of 300 strike outs, and 7 no hitters. His fast ball remained at 110 miles per hour during his forites, was something pitchers half his age would love to have.

Tennis people, you ought to know this guy, Andre Aggassi. One of the greatest tennis player in history, won 8 men single Grand Slam titles, and including a Golden Olympic medal 1996 Atlanta in Tennis men single. He ranked twice as No. 1 in the world, one time he had fallen down to No. 141, but climbed back up within a few month. He made a jump in ranking from No. 110 to No. 6, the highest jump in history. He retired after losing in Australian Open 2006.

All of you must be wondering: What do these old people have in common? Yes, they are old. Yes, they are all naturally talented in their areas. Yes, they both are married and kids. No, they don’t all have parrot. No, they don’t have ice cream every day. The key to their staying so long and dominant in their fields is that both of them do FITNESS.

Nolan Ryan did his own fitness training, every day an extra hour then every one else on his team. He did cycling, swimming, things that normal baseball players aren’t encouraged to do because their managers and ageants thought that it was harmful to their ability to play. He does his exersize every day, throwing a soft ball, football back and forth, did 40 yard dashes, leg pumping and weight lifting. He admitted in several books, without those exersizes, he couldn’t have lasted into the forties still playing ball.

Andre Agassi had his own personal trainer, Gil Reyes. He was the strenghening coach for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The university was famous during that era for its sporint teams, basketball was full of future NBA stars; the football team was famous for its speed and fitness. Gil Reyes was Andres Agassi’s trainer for 17 years, which kept him playing tennis until late 30s. He said him self in 2005  “Gil is the reason why I've won more Slams after the age of 29 than I did before. He's the reason why I'm still out there playing this sport at a time in my life when I can really understand and appreciate it.” One of Agassi’s most famous training was running up and down a 320 yard hill called ‘Magic Mountain’. Gil made Agassi a very famous drink during his tennis career, Gil’s Water. It had various colors which symbolized different uses, for speed, recovery, de-hydrate.

To conlcude, these ‘old people’ became legends and dominated their fields by committing their time and energy to fitness training.

IA 3 Wonderful Days in the Forest

During March 14-16, we of SWA International Award went on our Bronze adventurous journey. We went to Sentul, Bogor. It was a great trip. All 19 of us came back happy. During the 3 days, we carried our own food, water, and some even carried our own tents and sleeping bags. We trekked for about 15 kms in total. The second day was the hardest, 7 km with all of our stuff in side. Also that night, we camped on a hill top, but storm clouds were also camping on top of us, so every once in a while when there was lightning and thunder, we had to dash off the village next door to stay covered and protected. The third day, was the team challenge, we had split into two groups, and it was a race up the mountain.
All in all, it was a great trip and all of us had lots of fun ( we fed lots of mosquitos too).

Say What?! School Spirit Week 2013 Edition

I've decided to  kick off the start of this blog with some things I heard my classmates and friends say around school this week. It's Middle School Spirit Week here at Sinarmas World Academy, and so far, we've had School Colours Day on Monday, Tuesday off from school due to some religious holiday or another (one of the things I love best about Indonesia), Pajama Day on Wednesday, Opposite Day on Thursday, and Red Carpet Day on Friday. This is yet another Student Council stunt to raise money. Some genius came up with the brilliant idea of putting up a week of themed dress days, and charging money for those who don't dress in the appropriate style, or come to school wearing uniforms. Fine by me, I never miss the chance to dump my uniform for some comfy clothes, and if someone disagrees... So be it.

School Colours
Made easier by the fact that our school colours range from red and blue to yellow and white. That's a total of four colours, people!

Me: Holly, why are you wearing pink?? It's school colours day.
Holly: So what?
Me: Pink isn't a school colour.
Holly: Yeah, but I don't have red. So pink should be okay.

If the world functioned like that, I guess it would be okay to use baseball hats instead of motorcycle helmets or cheese puffs instead of marbles. And then, of course, I wouldn't have had to spend 400,000 rupiah on  soccer shoes for the tournament -I could've worn flip-flops instead.

Stay at Home and Sleep
Had an amazing day with my one of my best friends from my old school, Victoria. Watched Jack the Giant Slayer, in which he officially killed 3 giants and enslaved hundreds more. Without getting so much as a cut. Let's just say it's exactly how I expected it to be. I'm gonna write a review about that sometime. Maybe.

Boris: He’s definitely gay. He can’t say hello without touching me.

So that's how you judge it, folks. Apparently your male friends have to be gay if they insist on touching other male friends. (Though, personally, if the male friends in question have a six-pack, I wouldn't mind that either.)

Pajama Day
This was ruined by  most girls wearing jean shorts. Seriously? Jean shorts? Are you actually going to tell me that you wear those uber short, totally distressed jean shorts to sleep? I know you guys are self-conscious and everything, but that just messes up the whole point of Pajama Day, which is totally about feeling comfortable. Well, that and seeing the teachers in their sleepwear.

Won Jung: Alright, be careful, Boris.
Me: Why did he say “Be careful”?? What’s wrong with a normal goodbye?
Boris: I don’t know, but he always says that.

Because goodbye is just too mainstream. This is yet another peculiar way people have found to greet one another.

Bishka: Let’s go to Starbuck’s.
Adelle: Nah, I’ll pass.
Bishka: She’s paying. (Points to other girl)
Adelle: I’m in.
Me: You guys are cheap.
This is pretty much what high school will be like, according to Adelle. But I have to admit, this is smart.

Opposite Day
-And, as Mr.Phil spent the whole of Math Class insisting, Pi Day-
I thought Opposite Day was about turning your shirt inside-out (which everyone knows is much more comfy than wearing it backwards, when the tag is scratching at the front of your neck), but apparently other people had some more original (and much more entertaining) ideas. This should be renamed to the Day of the Drag Queens, because that is totally who ruled the day.

Our amazingly gorgeous friends at SWA (from left to right):

Selene: What are we supposed to wear tomorrow??
Nick: I don’t know.
Selene: I’m just going to wear a skirt.
Nick: A skirt? You’re only going to wear a skirt??

I laughed at this one, though it took Selene a little longer to get the joke.

Adelle: Are you sure you really saw Mr.Gavin?
Me: I’m sure Jackie did. Or she just saw someone tall.
Jackie: I’m sure I saw his pants. Those were really Mr.Gavins pants.

Jackie, Jackie, Jackie. You are amazing, you know that?? Not only are you the best soccer captain ever, you have the skills to recognize the coach's pants. I, personally, am a big fan of recognizing people by their shoes and backpacks, but it never occurred to me that pants could be a selling point. Though, granted, we do go to a school where we wear identical uniforms, so that couldn't really work well on the students, now, wouldn't it??

Friday, March 15th
Red Carpet Day
The day where all the girls come to school wearing tulle skirts and party dresses, and the guys put on soccer shorts and P.E. shirts.
Annabelle: So are you staying for the dance??
Me: No.

Tamara: Are you staying for the dance?
Me: No.

Vanessa: Are you going to be staying for the dance?
Me: No.

That's it. That is exactly what happened the entire day. I have nothing else to say.

Me: I love your shoes, even though they look extremely painful.
Atshila: Thank you, and yes, they are.

I’ve never understood the appeal of wearing uncomfortable shoes. They look great, of course, but so do my sneakers and sparkly ballet flats. Yes people, I own a pair of sparkly ballet flats.

Affectionately Yours,
